What to see: Oxleas, Jack and Shepherdleas Woods SSSI together form one of London's most extensive areas of ancient woodland on the London Clay.
The ancient Oxleas Wood covers 72 ha and are at least 8,000 years old. Severndroog Castle (built in 1784) stands in Castle Wood and Jack Wood contains a terraced garden including a rose garden.
The woods have large areas of oak and hazel. Several areas are actively coppiced. A number of plants of restricted distribution are present including wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis), guelder rose (Viburnum opulus), southern woodrush (Luzula forsteri) and buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica). There is a wide variety of fungi and a rich invertebrate fauna which includes several notable beetles and flies. Ponds contain a population of palmate newt, now the rarest native amphibian in London.
Volunteer and 'Friends of' groups: The Shooters Hill Woodlands Working Party, meeting monthly, works with Greenwich Council's Parks & Open Spaces team to make improvements to the parks.
